One of the ways to earn money writing articles is by getting paid by someone to write it. That's an awesome motivator. Not only do you get some additional cash flow when the article is done, you now also have a deadline. Deadlines are one of the best motivators I know of.

Articles are also a great tool for promotion. Whether it's self promotion or promotion of a product or a business. Being a published author does wonders for your credibility as I'll be getting into. So getting cheap promotion is another great motivator.

One of the things you can promote through an article is a website. Now most article directories don't like a lot of promotion in the article, but you're allowed to have a link to your website in the author box. Not only does that allow people who read the article and click the link to visit your website. It also increases the amount of one way links to your website.

The credibility gained by publishing an article can not be underestimated. If people like what you write they will see you as an authority on the subject. Being an authority earns you trust, which may lead to purchases, site visits and so on.

Who would you rather buy a product from. Somebody you don't know at all or somebody who is a know authority in her field? That was an easy one, wasn't it? Becoming an authority through article writing will not only give your site more visitors it will also make buyers out of potential customers.

Saturation is not possible in this day and age. I always hear the question from people, is saturation possible in a business or not. And it can be, depending on what in the world you are doing. If it is a ponzi scheme or something like that, yes, there is saturation, because it is only meant for the short term. There is really nothing there, no substance, nothing there, just something thrown together so a person can make money on a program. Usually the program does not last, it gets shut down by the government really quick or the owners take all the money and go off shore and you never hear from them again. Either way it is over and done with shortly because it just does not last, that type of thing does get saturated.

But with a real program, with real products, and it has substance of value to it, there is no saturation, especially something that is really needed in the marketing place. For instance, in the program that I am in right now we have something that is really needed in the market place and that is marketing. Not only do we teach you about marketing but we also teach you about business savvy, things that will help your business. We also give you tools and things that not only will help you in this business but any business that you want to do in the future. If you are in college, if you want to be a doctor you have to go through some kind of schooling, usually eight years of schooling just to become a doctor, and during that time you usually do not get paid.

That is a sacrifice that they make. Any area in the medical field you probably can make pretty good money. I think doctors base salary is somewhere between a hundred and twenty to a hundred and fifty or a hundred and eighty thousand dollars a year, and it goes up from there. It depends on whether you are a surgeon or what type of specialty you go into. It can go up to three or four hundred thousand a year. That is the sacrifice that they make by learning their skill in order to make that type of money.

Also saturation cannot happen if you know what you are doing. When you know how to market, there is no such thing. As a marketer, if you are marketing and we are talking specifically about pay per click, this marketing method called pay per click, let us take an example like a newspaper. Let us say that you have a few local newspapers that you advertise in, even if there is only one in your area, let us say you advertise in this program, or some other product, you have your ad down, you ad is pulling, you have tested it and tweaked it over a few months, and you had a good ad in there and you were getting good quality conversions.

You have your landing page or your lead capture page set up to where you are converting subscribers and you are getting sales. Well, it is possible in that same newspaper that you have the same marketing ad week after week, people might become use to your ad, so they might just look over it, the target market that is reading the newspaper. So what do you do in that instance and how long does it take for this to happen. I have seen it from anywhere from sixty days to six months, maybe even eight months. Is there any specific time, no. It just depends on where you are advertising at and how the people respond.

But if you see your ad pulling and then all of a sudden it kind of starts slacking off, you need to change the ad as a marketer. Some people have run the same ad once they have tweaked it, or maybe they had a winning ad from the beginning without tweaking it, and all of a sudden for whatever product they are promoting on or off line, or whatever business opportunity, whatever they are promoting, they think it must be saturated or something is going on here, because I am not getting the response I use to get. No, that is not the problem, because you have to tweak your ads as you go along, that is marketing 101 since way back.

The best role of business online is that of interdependency. We’ve all heard the old saying, “No man is an island.” When it comes to online business this is especially true.

If a business owner who takes their business into the online world determines they will be self reliant and never accept the help of anyone then that individual will not be in business long enough to change their minds.

It is accepted fact that the greatest tool for long-term exposure to your website is through Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Without it potential customers can’t find you. It is unreasonable to expect that you can adequately develop a website without optimizing your website for the best possible search engine ranking.

Search engines also place a high value on sites that have links placed on existing sites. These ‘backlinks’ demonstrate to search engines that others trust your site. By placing your link on their website these other businesses indicate a trust and recommendation for your site.

In effect the two strategies listed above rely exclusively on what others can do for you when it comes to your online business.

Shirley Temple once proclaimed in her movie Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, “I’m very self-reliant.” American westerns are filled with lines dealing with pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and holding down the fort. Many of us have grown up to believe if we want something done right we have to do it ourselves.

This thinking is in opposition to the rules associated with an online business.

The online world can only exist because people share. Individuals share technology, but the also share links, reviews, blogs, forums and a wide range of other marketing strategies that find a commingling of interdependency.

In online business you are as dependent on others as they may be on you. Unlike the word ‘dependent’, the term interdependent indicates a mutual dependency. In other words you are depending on others to help provide links back to your site while they are equally dependent on you (or others) for the success of their business.

Have you really taken a proactive approach to networking? It’s possible you are reading this today and you’ve never considered asking someone else to place a link to your site on his or her online business site.

It can feel awkward depending on others to achieve online success especially if you’ve been lead to believe reliance on others is also a sign of imposing on their otherwise brilliant generosity.

I suppose it could be a deep-seated sense of pride that makes it hard to consider the need to ask others for help. However, the truth is depending on others is really what has made the Internet possible. The growth of this online world is comprised of a link of computers, networks and servers that are connected in a way that provides the maximum benefit for all.

Building an online business can feel a bit like trying to build a house of cards. Without the ability to rely on the other ‘cards’ around you it is virtually impossible to build.

Interdependence. This is the essence of online business.

Selling your online business - something to think

I was fortunate enough to spend a weekend in Monte Carlo recently and being surrounded by the luxury yachts and other symbols of extreme wealth got me thinking about retirement :-)

Ok, I know, I am far too young to retire but one day I may well have had enough of working online (or indeed working!) and may want to sell my website businesses and of course, this is the case for any other business owner.

Which brings me to the subject of this article - the ideal time to think about selling your business (and this applies to an online business as well as offline) is long before you actually want to sell it. Preparing a business for sale is not as straight-forward as you may first think, especially if you want to get the best price possible. A business that has been set up in a formal and structured way, with specific operating procedures etc in place is always going to be more attractive to a potential buyer than one which is run on a more 'informal' basis.

Usually the easiest time to put these structures and procedures in place is when the business is first set up - of course, you can always add to them as the business develops and grows but a bit of time spent on this area in the beginning will pay huge dividends later on.

One of the biggest problems that I see with online businesses (from the point of view of reselling them in the future) is that they are often so 'personal'. By this I mean that the website owner has built a business based around his/her own experiences and knowledge and this means that throughout the site there are numerous personal references. I am guilty myself and several of my own sites are built entirely on my experiences and this is reflected heavily in the website content.

Now, this is certainly not a bad thing because the content that I have been able to develop with my experience and knowledge is valuable and earns me a good living BUT what if I wanted to sell my websites? It is unlikely that a buyer would want to purchase a site that had a reference to 'Richard Grady' and 'his experiences' on the majority of pages, which would mean that every reference to me on the site in question would have to be amended in some way. Because of the way that much of my content is written, this would, at best, involve a major revamp of the site and at worst might actually affect the sales of the business (who knows if the 'new' copy would sell as well as the original?)

It is a tough call. In an ideal world, I would have set my website businesses up to be a bit more 'corporate' - this would mean that the websites gave the impression of having a company rather than an individual behind them. However, if I had done this in the beginning, would my sites be as successful as they are today? My feeling is perhaps not - I know that many of my customers have bought from me because they can relate to the situations that I found myself in as they are going through a similar situation themselves. Had my sites represented a faceless corporation, then perhaps my customers would never have become customers in the first place?

I am not sure I have the answer to which is a better approach - personal or corporate - there are advantages and disadvantages to both. However I can make a few suggestions as to simple things that you can do early on in your businesses life which will definitely help you when/if you eventually want to sell it:

1. Keep accurate financial records - one of the first things a prospective buyer is going to want to know is how much money a business is making. It is no good just telling the buyer a figure and expecting him/her to believe you - your claim will need to be supported with documentary evidence. Also, don't fall into the trap of thinking that you will start keeping records once the business is making a decent income - that could be a year away and if you wait until then, you will have effectively 'lost' twelve months worth of your businesses history. A buyer will be far happier if they can see how a business has grown from day one rather than having accounts that start part-way into the game and show an immediate turnover of $100,000. (The tax-man will also be far happier with complete records!)

2. Open a business bank account - so many people start off by running their business finances through their own personal account. This means that it can be very difficult to see which transactions relate to the business and which relate to the weekly household shopping bill. A business bank account is key to the business history and for the same reason as you should keep financial records from as early as possible, you should have a separate business bank account.

3. Ensure that tax returns and other formal requirements are submitted on time - if you are keeping accurate records then there should be no reason why your business tax returns cannot be submitted (and paid!) on time. As well as saving you from being fined, it will also look good to a potential buyer - who wants to buy a business that has filed late returns every year and is regularly fined for late payments?

4. Speak to a business broker at least one year before you want to sell - a business broker will handle the sale of your business for you but it is important to get them involved in the sale process as early as possible. Doing this at least a year before you plan to sell is a good idea because it will give you time to put in place any suggestions that they may have as to how your business can be made more attractive to potential buyers.

Of course, the one thing you shouldn't do is get hung up on making your business attractive to future buyers - the first priority is to get it earning you some money :-)

As for payment plans; many peers of mine in the info-product industry (selling online products and services) find that they get a lot more orders and purchases if they offer payment plans - especially OUTRAGEOUS PAYMENT PLANS such as 18 payments of $19.95 or something like that. I do this for some of my products and services even if delivery of those products or services is well before their last payment due date and all of the payments are made online of course too by automatic payment which is the key. You don't want to go trying to collect checks after the fact, that's for sure.

3. Study - you will need to learn how to market your items online. There's tons of support in forums and ebooks to help guide you in the right direction.

4. Consistency - Be consistent at whatever you decide to do. Never lose focus of the task at hand.

Emails (you know the ones - not business related but fun to read) come in all the time and you just have to read them NOW. Eleven Steps to Success with a Website or Blog - The Crash Course for Webmasters

Part 1: Understanding what you do and what it's all about

Critical Rule for Success - Understand that what you are is a publisher! Your job is to publish information, ideas, articles, tutorials and all kinds of good stuff your web visitor will be interested in. Think of yourself as a newspaper or magazine except your pages are not made of paper they are made of web!

There are three components to having a successful website and you have to cover all three reasonably well if you want your publishing endeavor to be a success. I integrate all three of these things in this crash course so you will do it naturally and intuitively as you build you blog or website.

Component #1: You, as a publisher have to provide a continuous stream of useful and valuable content to your web visitors. How many newspapers or magazines just publish one or two issues? Nope, keep it going.

Component #2: Your content has to be of real value to your web visitors. You can't just publish junk.

Component#3: Your content has to be formatted in ways that the search engines see the value in it and understand it. This way you will get the good search engine ranking you deserve for having good content.

Part 2: The Process, Or What to Do!

1) Pick a subject or topic that you are passionate about or have a lot of information about. It could be anything from carpentry to telescopes, medieval warfare, stuffed animals etc... It is important that you are passionate about it because there is work involved and if you love the subject it won't be work, it will be a joy and a learning experience ---and you are more prone to keep going - keeping going is necessary according to component #1: Keep adding fresh content.

2) Choose a domain name or blog that has your subject keywords in it. If your subject is teddy bears then your domain name should have those words or related words in it. Something like www.teddy-bear-collectors.com or if you are using a free blog then http://teddybearcollectors.blogspot.com. See what I mean? Put the subject or very related words right in the domain name. This will help the search engines understand what your site is about. Very important and very useful. The engines will give you special treatment for that subject. And you will get listing faster.

3) Whenever you create a new page for your website or blog always give it a good name that says what is on the page like mysite.christmas-teddy-bear-ideas.htm. Never name it something like page1.htm. I will cover this naming a little bit more.

4) Now let's create some content - Generate a list of ideas for articles, tutorials and other things that your visitors might be interested in. This part is easier than it seems. Here is how to do it. Write down a bunch of major words in your topic and make them one to four word blurbs like this: (we will stick with teddy bears)

a) Teddy Bears

b) Teddy Bear Gifts

c) Making teddy bears

d) Teddy bear prices

e) Where to buy teddy bears

f) Bears for children

g) Makers of teddy bears

h) Teddy Bear making ideas

i) Make your own teddy bear

5) Ok, I think you get the idea there! Now go to this url ( http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com )and type each one of your line items one at a time and print up the results. What you end up with is a great list of what people are searching for in your subject area. This is a very important step! Do not skip this step. This tells you exactly what people are looking for in your subject, and more importantly, it tells you how they are looking and what words they are typing. Now, as an example I typed in "make teddy bear" and I came up with some great results: The first item is "Make your own teddy bear", the second is "How to make a teddy bear" and the third is "How to make a teddy bear costume. Ba-da-bing. I have a great list of projects and I know exactly what people want!

6) Now pick a search result that you like and that you would like to do or write about then write it! Take pictures, make notes and give it all to your web visitor. Focus on giving your web visitor the best you can do. Think about really solving the problem your visitor has. Hey, Go ahead and make a teddy bear costume, it's your job and well, a lot of fun.

7) Make your project search engine friendly. Make the subject of your article or project exactly what the search result is so If I tackle the "How to make a teddy bear costume" I call that article or project "How to Make a teddy bear Costume"!!! And if you remember from a bit earlier when I save the blog post or web page I call it that too! So www.mysite.com/how-to-make-a-teddy-bear-costume.htm is perfect. Naming the project and the page appropriately will cover Component #3.

8) Now let's do just a little bit more search engine optimization and make your page or pages really friendly to the search engines. If you are doing a web page make sure you add a description tag that really says what the page is about. In this case something like this: This is a project that will show you how to make a beautiful teddy bear costume for children ages 2 and up. This description will show up in the search engine listings so make sure it has both your keyword phrase "Make a teddy bear costume", and make sure it is appealing to people.

9) Keywords - Make sure, if you are doing a web page you add appropriate keywords like teddy bear, make, costume and if you have a blog then add these keywords.

10) Okay, let's monetize our site: I recommend you do this process above for at least a month before you start looking for ways to make money. You want to have a decent collection of interesting projects, ideas, articles and related stuff before you start looking for the money. Once your site or blog has lots of stuff on it then sign yourself up for Google AdSense and some kind of affiliate program like the Amazon Associates Program. Put the snippets of code on your pages and you are ready to go! I suggest that if you are using amazon you go with products that you hand pick so they are exactly targeted to the subject of each web page.

11) Now repeat the process and write more articles and tutorials etc... Keep the content flowing and always target it to what your web visitor wants.

Ok, so what have we done? We have created a web publishing presence that is exactly targeted to a subject and is friendly to the search engines. People will really like your stuff and the engines will clearly understand it. In no time at all you will be getting good search engine traffic because they will love you and send people your way. It really works and it is all about a subject that you are passionate about. Does it get any better than that?

If you have decided to start a business you have made a decision and no one can stop you. Well actually one person can stop you and that person is you. You have to put in the time and effort to start this business and build it based around solid fundamentals. You have a great opportunity to run a successful business and once you have put in the initial work you will actually have the option to put your business on autopilot and just collect the checks at the end of the month. Don't start shopping for million dollar mansions just yet you have to put in the work first. It all starts with market research and this may be the most tedious part of the entire process but hopefully I can make this task a bit easier with some basic tools and strategies that will speed up the process 10 fold.

Now that you have a niche in mind you are going to have to perform some market research to find out if there is a legitimate market and cash being spent.

You may have already started the first step if you have some experience and even though it is very basic it has to be done. The task I am referring to is keyword research. This is a free tool that has been used for many years and is still effective but in my opinion it is a bit outdated and at times is bit slow. I am not saying don't use it just don't take its results as gospel. Also note that the search volume per month on Google is probably double what overture data shows. Another tool that I find to be very accurate is at freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ Wordtracker is a great service that is updated frequently and they also offer a paid version that provides many great features. So type your main keywords into these tools and analyze the search volume per month on overture and search volume per day on Wordtracker. It is up to you whether you think there is a viable market based on the search engine volume for your top keywords.

Your next step is to switch over to your favorite search engine whether it is Msn, Yahoo or Google. You will notice that every time that you do a search a listing of sponsored ads will show up on the right hand side of the results. I would recommend using Google as your data because it is hands down the leader in paid advertising. Once again type in your main key terms related to your niche and take notice of how many listings appear on the right side of the page. If you notice that there are an abundance of ads that is a good sign. You want a market with a healthy amount of advertising. Some may think this is bad but really it just proves that people are spending and making money.

Your third step is very easy because you don't even have to leave Google. All you have to do is start clicking on the sponsored advertising. The reason for this is because you will be taken to the merchant's site and it will help you to paint a bigger picture of the market. By going to the merchant's sites you can get an idea of what is being sold online because after all your business is based online. Also take note of the marketing process for each product. You may want to become an affiliate or create your own product down the road.

With these three tips alone you can weed out the profitable markets and save a few dollars on fancy software that brag of doing all the work for you. This research will only take you about half an hour tops and you will know if you have a firecracker or a dud in no time.

Step-by-Step Help Guide - How to Start an Online Business

I teach hundreds of students this information everyday, and I always see the same questions over and over. So I thought I would put this article here so everyone knows the steps on how to start an online business. I cant go into too much details here as I am limited on space, so if you want the details you will have to go to my website.

But here is the basic steps:

find products to sell online
Find who is selling this product so you can affiliate with them or find who will drop ship for you.
If you are doing affiliate website you can go to irs.gov and get an EIN FREE you can also just use your SSN.
If you are doing drop shipping you may want to get a business license, every state has their differences.
I am not a tax advisor so ask around, but I do my own taxes, which there isn't much anyways.
Next is getting a website up and running with your product on it or your affiliate links
Now time to advertise your website, there are hundreds of different ways to advertise you site, social, submit articles, forums, bookmarking, pay per click, search engine optimization, email listings (DO NOT SPAM), and tons more. Most of these are FREE as well!
tweak your site, update it, if no one is buying this product trash it, start over. If there is a certain product on your site not making you any money, but others are, toss that product out and try another. Could eve be as much as changing the image, or wording for that specific one!

NO, but you at least want to look at a few sample codes and such just so you know what it looks like. But the most you will be doing is copying and pasting HTML code to place ads on your website or blog.

Can I use free websites?

YES, but depends on the terms of service set by the provider. Whether they allow ads or not, what kind of content you can have, etc.

Can I start a blog instead of a website? YES, there are many of my students using a blog instead of a website, one thing great about this is easy to use and very search engine friendly. If you use a free blog some of them restrict what you can and cant do as far as ads, code types, etc.

How much money can I make?

There is no set amounts, this is no guarantee you will make these amounts, but I have seen numbers anywhere from $1000/mo. - $8,000/mo. There are claims of people making more and more, but those are the extremes, someone that found he perfect product, advertising, etc. You can follow their EXACT steps and not make those amounts, so I keep it reasonable and easy to make.

How long does it take before I start making money online?

This depends as well. You can make money in the first day you launch your website, and it could take months as well. This all depends on how easy it is do find your website. How much advertising you have done. I've seen them vary all the time, the average is about a week or 2 if you are doing something very specific, which I recommend, if you are doing something more broad, if will take longer.

Can you give us an example?

YES, I can give you a short example here, but I can't make a website here, so you can check out my website and I have a bunch of examples there.

Make a website on "how to make a toga" give step by step instructions on how to make a toga, affiliate with companies that sell products you will need to use, sheets, scissors, maybe rope, etc. Also give them options to buy a book on this if you can find one. Place some other ads they maybe interested in that are still relevant, most likely your viewers are going to attend a toga party or host a toga party right? So give them some products for this, products that will help them host a toga party and also maybe some ideas on how to run their party. Also run some pay per click ads on this site maybe from google or yahoo and have them automatically generate ads on your website that are relevant. Now advertise this website on article sites, other blogs about parties, forums on parties, groups on parties, maybe make a video on how to make this toga and place it on youtube. Then if those few free ways don't work, toss an ad on google or yahoo yourself advertising your site, bid LOW, maybe $0.05-$0.20 to start with. and see what kind o profits you make before you start bidding higher. You spend $50/mo on advertising and make more than that great keep going, if you spend $50/mo on advertising and make less, lower you advertising and do ome more free techniques, still no good, trash the idea and move on.

10 Steps to Web Success

There are plenty of people out there that will charge you for their ideas but never back it up with real life quantifiable examples. This article is designed to tell you exactly what we did to create and make a successful Internet based business.

Let me start by saying we earn enough money from this site to live comfortably. It has not made us millionaires but it generates increasing amounts of revenue month after month and if the trend continues, there is nothing we will want for financially as a result of our efforts.

Secondly, do not be fooled into thinking that running a successful web site is a set and forget proposition, it is hard work in terms of the amount of hours you must spend to ensure it works for you.

All of the con men out there that try to sell you set and forget web sites and promise you easy money are exactly that "Con Men".

OK, Step by Step to Web Success

This process is on-going and has so far taken 6 years (as at 2008) so be prepared to take your time at becoming rich.

Step 1 - What do we do Online?

The first thing we did was decide what it was we had to sell. The choices were many as it turned out, here are some of the ideas we came up with:

We could set up an on-line consultancy business (X)
We could write and sell software (X)
We could write and sell E-Books (Everyone is an expert at something and this is the easiest way to own a product of your own) (X)
We could set up an affiliate web site and sell other peoples products including utilizing Adsense (X)
We could use the Internet as a high tech traditional mail order business (X)
We could sell our photos or artwork as stock photography
We could write a novel and sell it online or look for a publisher online
We could create web sites for other people (X)

What we ended up doing was a number of these things. We did all of the things with a (X) next to them.

It has been our experience that you cannot simply focus on one thing and hope to make it big. Money has a lovely way of accumulating when you are involved in several endeavors. Whilst one may lapse, the others may peak and overall, things keep ticking along.

Some of the above endeavors make more money than others and our 3 stars are the Software Sales from software we have written ourselves, our Thinking Racing site and the Coffee Mug business. Between them, they contribute 70% of our income.

Before we move to step 2, bear in mind that just because you are on the Internet does not mean you have to sell on-line products. We took a traditional business (making coffee mugs) and used the interment as an electronic marketing tool and order taker. This has been a huge success and I am certain there are plenty of other traditional businesses that could benefit from the Internet in the same way.

Step 2 - Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

I know everyone wants to jump right in and make a web site but unless you are prepared with everything you need to make your venture work, you are wasting your time and money.

In our case, we had to do the following:

Write the software we were going to sell. We started with one application and we are still adding to our product line every year.
Set up our affiliate programs (We use ClickBank mostly and I will explain why below)
Write the copy for our web pages
Write and publish our E-Book
Research how to make coffee mugs, purchase the equipment and make some samples
Get business cards, letter heads and all of the usual stationary you use in business (If you want to be treated like a business, you need to look and act like one)
Get an accounting system and learn how to use it
Register our Business Name
Create our Web Site offline (This is time consuming and you have to be happy with the result, if you are not 100% convinced that your site conveys what you want it to, others won't be either)

Step 3 - What will our site look like?

It is vitally important that your site conveys what it is you want it to. The best advice I can give is research the net, look at your competitors and other sites for ideas. Pick and choose things that you think work and then ensure those ideas are harmoniously merged with your ideas and design.

Decide the theme you want for your site, for instance, we wanted to follow a content driven major portal style similar to news sites and msn etc. So our site is predominately text based (This is also very good for search engine optimization). Obviously, if you sell visual products like Artwork for instance, this style of site is not appropriate and that's what I mean. Look at what you are trying to do and design your site appropriately.

We have found the following Do's and Don't's

Do use lots of text
Do keep animations to a minimum
Do try to avoid Flash and Java
Do optimize your images
Do keep consistent design and colour schemes throughout your site
Do change your site often to keep it fresh
Do have a privacy policy clearly published on your site
Do make it easy for visitors to contact you
Do make it easy for visitors to purchase from you, make the transaction a 1 step process, do not ask them to register for anything else during the payment process, it will put them off.
Do have give away's of genuine value to build visitor loyalty and goodwill
Do offer plenty of freely accessed valuable information about your subject matter
Do use PayPal as at least one of your payment methods (Lots of people now use PayPal and it means they do not need to enter their credit card every time they wish to purchase something. This is still a major drawback of selling online)
Do always offer a money back guarantee, this gives the purchaser confidence in your product and if your product is what you say it is, you will get very few, if any refund requests. We get 1 in 100 sales.
Don't go the hard sell
Don't use pop-ups, pop-under's or floating windows - they turn people off instantly
Don't clutter your site up, make it easy for people to find what you want them to find
Don't promise anything that is not true or not deliverable
Don't ever share your customers details with anyone else

Ultimately you want to achieve the following with your web site:

Attract Attention
Arouse Interest
Stimulate Desire
Call for Action

Step 4 - Who do we host with?

There are literally thousands of web hosting companies out there and choosing the correct one is obviously very important. I don't think there is a right and wrong solution but I will tell you why we chose Homestead.

Homestead has a very low cost entry point and allows you to continually upgrade your package as your business grows and you can afford it.

It is fast and reliable
Support is excellent
There is no advertising associated with your site
You can create as many sites as you like
They will do everything from Domain hosting to email and mailing list management
They have an extremely easy to use and extremely powerful web page production software package which is free of charge to their customers
They include e-commerce facilities (Very important if you want to sell anything)
It is very quick to develop, test and deploy your web sites
You can try it for free for 30 days, that's easily long enough to see if it's right for you

Frankly, it does not matter who you host with as long as they are reliable, fast and cost effective. Homestead is easy and as such, it has limitations, the most notable being lack of support for PHP and ASP. For our Thinking Racing site we used Bravenet as we required PHP and MySQL capability.

Step 5 - OK I have my Site Online - What Now?

Once you have produced your site, tested all of the links, tested your affiliate programs, spell checked every page, tested your e-commerce system and you are happy with the final product, it is time to upload it and go live to the world.

Unfortunately this sounds much grander than it really is, the fact is, you will upload your site to your host and no one will know it exists except you. From here on in, all of your efforts need to be applied to the following:

Web Site Optimization
Web Site Marketing both Online and Offline
Press Releases via PR Web
Search Engine Submission
Finding Linking Partners
Instigating Pay Per Click Campaigns that work
Trial and error with web page design and copy
Implementing Google Adsense if it suits your site

The simple truth is that for you to succeed online, you need visitors and lots of them but don't fall for the trap of buying traffic from people who claim they will send you 10,000 visitors for $9.95 etc, it NEVER works.

What you need is targeted traffic, that is, people that are already pre-qualified as interested in what you have to offer. This is difficult but not impossible to achieve. The good thing is that when one of these people do visit you, it is far more likely that they will purchase something from you than someone stumbling upon your site.

A word of advice as to why NOT to purchase traffic.

Traffic delivered in this way is usually by one of 2 methods (1) Pop-Under exchanges or (2) People paid to click on sites. In the first instance, your site loads unseen by the user whilst viewing some other site, the result is, they will close your site without even looking at it as they did not request it. The second method is people being paid to visit sites, obviously this will never get the pre-qualified visitors you are looking for. These people visit as many sites as they can all day every day as they get paid per verified visitation. All in all it is worthless and a waste of your money. I can almost guarantee you will be tempted to use these services that guarantee traffic (we have used them), but DO NOT, the only guarantee is that you will be wasting your money.

Step 6 - Web Site Optimization (Search Engine Optimization)

Web Site Optimization or SEO as it is known is simply designing your web site in a way that is easy for the Major Search Engines to find you and index your content. People write truck loads of information on this subject but there are only a few things that really matter, these are:

Web Page Headings - Make sure your Web Page Headings include the key words you want people to find you with when searching (It's amazing how many people forget to have a page heading at all and without one you will almost certainly not be found)
Key Words - When choosing key words, never use single words like shoes, use something more descriptive like red leather shoes, it will help you float above the millions of other shoe sites
Have the word Official in your Web Page Headings
Make sure your Web Page Headings relate to what is on the page
Meta Tags - Ensure your Key Words are included in Meta Tags
Key Word Count - Make sure you have a key word count on each page of between 2% and 5%
ALT Tags - Ensure all of your images have an ALT tag, preferably one that relates to your key words
Inward Links - The most important thing for search engines is how many inward links you have so it is vitally important to trade links with sites in the same niche as you
Java & Flash - Avoid having links in Java or Flash code, the search engines do not see it
Site Map - Always have a site map page that has text links to every other page on your site, that way the search engines will find all of your pages
Key Word Stuffing - Never simply repeat your key words over and over on the page, this is known as key word stuffing and the search engines will ban your site if you do it
Image Optimization - Ensure all of your images have been optimized for fast loading

Step 7 - Web Site Marketing Online and Offline

Now that you have a great site and it is optimized both for the viewer and the search engines it is time to start marketing it. This is the single most important thing you can do if you want to succeed online. Marketing can be done well with great outcomes or it can be done badly with very negative results indeed.

The biggest no no is Spamming, or sending out emails to people that have not requested anything from you. Not only will you annoy the intended recipient, you will likely be banned by your ISP.

Here are some of the steps and advice we use when marketing our site:

Press Release - When we have something to say we always submit a press release to PRWeb.com. You can do this for free but for a small fee you get much better coverage. Your release will end up on things like Google News and be picked up by potentially hundreds of thousands of people. Make sure what you have to say is news worthy or it will be a waste of time and money.
Search Engine Submission - You MUST submit your web site to the search engines every month. This is very tedious and we use a 3rd party search engine submission service. You can do it yourself but your time is more valuable.
Pay Per Click - I talked earlier about getting targeted visitors to your web site. The easiest and quickest way of doing this is to use one of the Pay Per Click operators. Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are the biggest and as a consequence probably the best but we have had great results at a lower cost with LookSmart. These services cost you money so you need to weigh up the benefits of visitations against the cost of getting those visitors. We use this form of marketing extensively and achieve good results. I suggest you visit Adwords to get the detail.
Link Exchange - A great free way to get targeted visitors is to do link exchanges with like minded web masters. Search the net, find sites that you think will benefit your site and write to the web master and request a link swap. Its a win win situation. Yes it is time consuming and tedious but if you want to succeed, you need to work at this. Remember, it has taken us 6 years so far and we are still doing this stuff because it works.
Mailing List - Building up a mailing list is very important. It is always easier to sell to an existing client than it is to constantly try and get new ones. Have a free newsletter registration on your web site. Once people Opt In to your newsletter, you can email them periodically with news and special offers. This is one of the most successful forms of web marketing.
Viral Marketing - If you sell software, give away a free trial version and encourage those that download it to pass it on to their friends. This is a form of Viral Marketing and it works. Even if you simply make a cool screen saver and give it away, it will bring you customers as long as every screen has your web link on it. If you intend to do this form of marketing, make sure your give away is of high quality, you want people to associate your site with quality. The best place to submit your giveaway to is Download.com, its free and it will drive thousands of people to your site over time. We developed Streaming Stats as a free giveaway simply to drive new customers to Thinking Digital. It is a product of high quality that is fun and informative and has intrinsic value. I cannot recommend this form of marketing enough, it is slow but steady and never stops selling for you.
Site Intelligence - Track your visitors and find out what it is they are interested in on your site. Homestead has a built in system for doing this but there are several on the market. Once you know what your visitors are looking at, you can better understand what is attracting them to you in the first place and more importantly, you can use this knowledge to FUNNEL them to where you want them to go. For instance, if they are predominately going to information pages, imbed links in those pages that will direct them to your sales pages. An excellent free system for this is Google Analytics.
Offsite Marketing - Make sure that your web address is printed on everything that leaves your premises, invoices, business cards, invitations, the lot. You never know who will read it or where it will show up.
Local Demographics - If you operate within a local demographic, use it. For instance, the coffee mug business is only interested in customers from Australia so we limit our Google AdWords to Australia only. That way our Ads are not seen by people outside our territory and they become even more targeted. Targeted customers ultimately mean more sales.
Assist Charity - Again, if you operate locally, advertise or better still get editorial coverage for what you do in the local press, TV and radio. One way to do this is to donate your products or services to a worthy cause like Earthquake relief and then let people know about it. The press love goodwill stories and you will get thousands of dollars in free publicity. A nice by product is that you also get to help whichever cause it is.
Bartercard - Bartercard is a trade exchange whereby you trade goods for other goods in a similar way to how business was conducted hundreds of years ago. Whilst no actual cash changes hands, there are over 55,000 businesses globally that you can deal with. Being a member of Bartercard can increase demand for your products or service and also generate additional cash sales through word of mouth. The Bartercard dollars that you accumulate through trading can be used to purchase almost anything. Whilst you could not run your whole business on this system, it is a great way to spread the word about your products and services. This is recommended once you have a sustainable business.
Referrals - Ask your visitors to refer your site to their friends via a Referral Button, if necessary give them an incentive to do so. For instance, "tell 5 of your friends about our site and get this great screen saver free". Homestead has built in support for this feature.
Web Polls - Ask your visitors what they think of you and have it visible as a web poll, if you are doing your job well, most responses will be positive and that will encourage people to do business with you.
Gift Vouchers - If you can do it technically, offer gift vouchers for purchases at your site. Not only will you make an immediate sale, you will gain not one but two customers.

Step 8 - Marketing Maintenance

Once you have your web site on the search engines and you have implemented some or all of the above marketing tips, you should see traffic appearing at your site and hopefully sales. If you are getting reasonable traffic (at least 100 visitors per day) and you are not making any sales, you need to revisit your web site and ask yourself, why?. The easiest way to see if someone will purchase a product or service from you is to ask yourself the question "if I happened upon this site without any prior knowledge of it, would I be tempted to buy?". If the answer is no, why not?. Make the necessary changes and and let the new changes run for a few weeks and conduct the same test. Web site marketing is all about trial and error, you will eventually happen upon things that work, keep them and discard those that don't.

These are the steps we undertake week in and week out to continually market our sites:

Continue to look for mutually beneficial link partners
Search the net for new opportunities to co-market or advertise our sites
Evaluate new marketing propositions as they become known to us Adbrite is an example of this
Be prepared to lower the price of your offerings if they are not selling. Products and Services do not sell for only 2 reasons (1) Price and (2) Quality. So, if you are sure of the quality of what you offer, lower the price or offer an incentive to buy. We did this with our Bookie Beater software, the original price was $29.95 and we sold a few but after lowering the price to $19.95, sales sky rocketed.
Tweak your site constantly, change special offers, change images and layout occasionally, add new articles and include RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds where appropriate. These bring new fresh content to your site every day free of charge which not only adds authoritive content to your site, it helps raise your profile with the search engines.
Make sure your web site sells the benefits of what you are offering. People buy benefits, not features.
Keep in touch with people who have bought from you in the past, it has been proven many times that it is substantially easier to sell to an existing customer than to acquire a new one. Send a monthly news letter to those that have opted in to your mailing list, no matter how small that list is.
Differentiate your product or service from your competitors, this can be through a benefit statement or even cost. Often, people will pay substantially more for a product if the benefits of that particular product outweigh the benefits of the competitor.
If you decide to spend money on advertising, make sure it is with sites that are in the same niche as you. It is useless advertising on a broad ranging information portal when you sell washing machines. you need to be advertising on sites that review or promote washing machines. We advertise on racing-index because it fits our demographic and it has been proven to work.
Use your web site intelligence to see what pages people are visiting and for how long, where do they enter your site, where do they leave your site. Look at the referrers and see where you customers have been referred from. They would be a good place to link with or advertise with don't you think? Traffic patterns change and you need to constantly monitor this change and modify your site accordingly if you want to make your site work for you.

Step 9 - Other ways to Monetize your site

Google AdSense

People have their own opinions about Google's Adsense program but I am a big fan. It is free to join and enables you to run other peoples ads on your site. When someone clicks on these ads, you get paid a commission. Google always pay on time and you can realise quite sizeable amounts of money from this if done correctly.

The one big drawback is that when someone clicks an AdSense Ad, they leave your site. I don't like this aspect of the program but if your site is appealing enough, your visitor will return of their own accord.

A few tips to successful AdSense use:

Always place a short sentence about what you are promoting directly below the AdSense Ad. This will ensure that AdSense only shows Ads that are relevant to your content and guarantee a higher click through rate.
Use borderless ads and try to include them in your body text, people tend to click on body copy placement more.
Ensure your Ads are using the same style and colour scheme as the rest of your site, this lessens the feeling of viewing an advertisement.

Clickbank Affiliate Program

Clickbank has over 11,000 products online and there are sure to be some that are synergistic with your web site. You can earn anywhere up to 75% of the sale price of an item simply by becoming a Clickbank Affiliate and placing some links on your site. This is a free service and Clickbank pay commissions every 2 weeks.

We have used this service to both promote our own software and other peoples for 6 years and it has earned us substantial income in that time.

If you have some spare space on your pages, why not place some nicely designed ads from the Clickbank catalogue, it won't affect the design of your site and will more likely make you some money.

Create Web Sites for Other People
